Interview with Jane S. Bellet, MD

I'm Dr. Nick Brownstone here with Dr. Jane Bellott, professor of dermatology and pediatrics at Duke University. Dr. Bellott, great to have you here. Want to ask you a few questions about the prax of dermatology. First thing I want to ask is what is the most common misconception you hear from your patients? The most common one that I hear is that they should not apply sunscreen to their baby who is under six months of age. And in fact, this is not true. Of course, we want them to shade them, wear sun protective clothing, et cetera. But if they're still going to be outside, put on that physical blocker with either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, because we certainly don't want burnt skin on a young infant. No, we certainly don't want that. That's some great advice. Can you give me your best tip for treating pediatric patients with hemangiomas? The most important thing is treat early if they need treatment. Do not delay referral to a pediatric dermatologist as young, as young as possible because treatments do work better when they're younger. Great. One more question that has to do with therapies. For which conditions do we need better therapies for in dermatology? Absolutely. We definitely need better treatment for nail lichen planus. This is something that we really struggle in the nail world to be able to treat and so hope hopefully in the future we will have something better. I'm hopeful about that. Love your answers. She emphasizes that doctors should not delay referring patients to a pediatric dermatologist as young as possible since treatments for hemangiomas work better when the patients are younger.</p><h5>Which conditions do we need better therapies for in dermatology?</h5><p>In Dr. Bellet’s opinion, dermatology needs better therapies for nail lichen planus. Dermatologists often struggle to treat it, and she hopes that in the future, better treatment options will develop.<br>&nbsp;</p>
