TUESDAY, Oct. 15, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Sensitive skin (SS) seems to be associated with primary hyperhidrosis (PHH), according to a study published online Sept. 30 in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.Erika T. McCormick, from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C., and colleagues surveyed 637 PHH sufferers to assess HH and SS symptom burden. The survey was disseminated by the International Hyperhidrosis Society. Random forest machine learning algorithms were used to build a predictive classification model for SS.The researchers found that 89 percent of the respondents reported SS; and HH and SS severity scores were significantly associated. SS occurred on body sites that were and were not affected by HH. For predicting SS in this cohort, the Sensitive Scale-10 validated questionnaire was most helpful."Our study, using machine learning models, confirmed for the first time that someone with primary hyperhidrosis is more likely to have sensitive skin than the general public, even in areas where there is no excessive sweating," lead author Adam Friedman, M.D., also from George Washington University, said in a statement. WEDNESDAY, July 12, 2023 -- For patients aged 12 years and older with primary palmar hyperhidrosis (PPHH), 20 percent oxybutynin hydrochloride lotion (20 percent OL) is more effective than placebo for reducing palmar sweat volume, according to a study published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.Tomoko Fujimoto, M.D., Ph.D., from the Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Fukurou Dermatology Clinic in Tokyo, and colleagues examined the efficacy of 20 percent OL for reducing palmar sweat volume in a randomized trial involving Japanese patients aged 12 years and older with PPHH. Participants received 20 percent OL or placebo (144 and 140, respectively) on both palms once daily for four weeks. Response was defined as a reduction of sweat volume of at least 50 percent from baseline.The researchers found that the responder rate for sweat volume was significantly higher in the 20 percent OL arm than the placebo arm at week four (52.8 versus 24.3 percent, respectively). There were no serious adverse events reported; none of the adverse events resulted in treatment discontinuation."When administered for four weeks, 20 percent OL is effective for the treatment of PPHH and has a favorable safety profile. Therefore, it may represent a promising treatment option for PPHH," the authors write.Several authors received fees from and others are employees of Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., which funded the study and manufactures the 20 percent oxybutynin hydrochloride lotion.

Several Old Spice and Secret aerosol spray antiperspirants and hygiene products have been voluntarily recalled in the United States due to the presence of benzene, Proctor &amp; Gamble says.




 Benzene exposure can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin. It can lead to cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow, as well as potentially life-threatening blood disorders.




 Proctor &amp; Gamble said that it has not received any reports of harm from the recalled products, which were distributed across the country. The recalled products have expiration dates through September 2023. The UPC codes, names, and descriptions are listed on the

Del Rosso, DO, welcomes Lawrence Green, MD, clinical professor at George Washington University and practicing dermatologist, to discuss the evolving landscape of hyperhidrosis and the latest FDA-approved therapy, sofpironium bromide gel.&nbsp;Dr Green highlights that an estimated 16 million people in the US experience clinical hyperhidrosis, with axillary hyperhidrosis being the most frequently reported. However, a significant challenge is patient reluctance to discuss symptoms, often due to embarrassment or frustration with ineffective or irritating treatments. Dr Green suggests raising awareness through social media, office signage, and intake forms to help identify more patients needing care.&nbsp;The discussion then shifts to treatment options, including botulinum toxin, devices such as the Brella SweatControl Patch and the energy-based miraDry, and pharmacologic therapies.&nbsp;They explore anticholinergic treatments in depth, explaining how sofpironium bromide gel differs from traditional glycopyrrolate wipes. While glycopyrrolate wipes can be messy, highly saturated, and prone to causing systemic absorption from contact with the hands, sofpironium bromide gel is applied via an applicator in a metered dose, reducing unintended exposure and improving application precision.
