Vitiligo

Vitiligo can affect any population of any skin complexion, racial ancestral background. But when vitiligo affects individuals with richly pigmented skin, the contrast between lesional skin and nonlegional skin can be quite striking and therefore more disfiguring for that patient. If you add on top very various cultural factors that can also add to the stigmatization of vitiligo, you can clearly appreciate the burden of vitiligo on patients with skin of color and some of the nuances in terms of the quality of life impact. So the bottom line, as clinicians, we shouldn't underestimate the psychological burden of vitiligo on our patients and provide them with the appropriate treatment to get as much repigmentation as we can for them, particularly in highly visible, sensitive areas like the face and the hands.
