Do people with atopic dermatitis always have atopic co-morbidities?

You? Absolutely not. It turns out, while there is a powerful and important connection between atopic dermatitis and other atopic comorbidities, for example, food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, all of these things are very common. And it turns out there is a common connection, especially that gets stronger as the disease severity gets higher. So more severe atopic dermatitis really does seem to be more likely to have allergic comorbidities. That being said, many patients have none. And I have a fairly sizable group of patients with even severe ad that really do not have asthma, hay fever, allergies of any sort. And in fact, even when you do serology, they don't even have elevated ige. So some people have actually talked about calling this a different disease altogether that maybe we would call atopic dermatitis if they have atopic comorbidities in this one atopiform dermatitis that's in the literature. Other people call it intrinsic versus extrinsic eczema. And the answer is we just don't really know why and what some of the other key ideas here, fundamentally from a pathophysiologic standpoint, are.
