Are there any natural options to treat atopic dermatitis?

You. I commonly get questions from patients and their parents about natural options to treat their child's atopic dermatitis, and I totally understand that thought process. Everybody wants to use something more natural with their kids. There are a few things that have been studied in patient populations with atopic dermatitis, and so typically when I get asked this question, those are the things I go to to educate my patients and their parents. Olive oil has been studied and was found to worsen atopic dermatitis. Coconut oil has been studied and was found to be a good antibacterial agent. It can help with the skin flora, but it was really neither pro nor con for the atopic dermatitis. So if patients and their families like using coconut oil, I'm okay with that. Sunflower seed oil was studied for atopic dermatitis and was found to be effective for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. The one hardship with that is it can be hard to find a good preparation of sunflower seed oil that doesn't contain a whole bunch of other ingredients that your patient might not tolerate. The last natural treatment that I commonly will mention to patients and their families is CBD. Topical. CBD, I think does have some good anti itch properties and might even work as an antiinflammatory more to come in the future as they get studied more in depth, but I think that's something to watch.
